New [Dogs] on the Block

Padfoot has a friend staying with him this weekend. He’s been so well behaved lately we wanted to surprise him by hosting his old friend Cola out for the weekend. They met in Atlanta but seeing as how Cola recently moved to Hattiesburg, it was just a matter of scheduling to get them together.
I guess Pad found out Cola was coming though, because minutes before her arrival he threw up in the living room. (Sweet boy let those butterflies really get to him I guess...) Cat the human cleaned it up while cats the animals lurked outside because our sweet, sweet neighbor feeds them and it’s literally (figuratively) the worst. “I just like cannot even…” I said because what else would an overdramatic, twenty year old girl ever say?
So, Cola arrived, bone in mouth, and a jolly reunion was had. By that I mean both acted indifferent and then ran around the house butt sniffing and human sniffing. Until they finally settled down to watch some reality show about three dogs in LA on Animal Planet. (What is with kids and trash TV?!) They spent a few minutes watching and catching up over a light snack of rawhide and barking, but then a Sarah Mclachlan commercial came on, so we quickly turned the television off. Really, Animal Planet?! I mean, they’re just kids, “cha’feel?”
We were a bit distracted after a pipe burst outside and my bedroom began taking on water faster than the Titanic (and by that I mean a corner of the floor was wet and I was not pleased) but I moved my bed, complained a lot and once again, “just like could not even.” So I headed out on adventures with friends. Meanwhile, Cat was off to see Sam and Annie had already left for dinner.
Unfortunately Padfoot and Cola are a little young and furry for the local high school basketball game, so they stayed home. “Doors open, no bedrooms, no funny business,” I told them as I headed off. “I’ll be back in a few hours; answer the dog phone you Instagram with if we call please, Padfoot.” He rolled his dog eyes but I know he was just being slick in front of Cola, so I let it slide.
After watching Airbud movies 1-17, the kids slept in make shift bunk beds. Pad slept on top of the bed and Cola slept under. Like literally burrowed underneath the bed. We appreciated the understood “above reproach” arrangements and just how extreme they took that. As a self-appointed godmother, it’s nice to be able to trust my young ones.
On Saturday morning, the kids awoke to breakfast set near the table. While I awoke to let in a man in to fix my flooding bedroom with industrial size fans and carpet shampoo. On the other side of town, Annie had already won the Chickfila 10K race in her age group. This was all before 9 AM mind you.
If you're in the area, her medal is proudly displayed on the achievement board- come take a look. She might even let you pose with it. If you're not from around here, I took this picture. Pad is wearing the medal because "a win for one of us is a win for all of us," according to Annie. So I guess I won a 10K this morning. I should call my mom. And reward myself with doing nothing and a diet coke.
Padfoot took advantage of the sunshine and offered Cola a walk. He was MORTIFIED to find out that we would be accompanying them around the neighborhood, leashes and all. He came around though and even snapped some great pictures for his Instagram. [@padfootblass] “Pad, you are worth more than the number of likes,” we keep telling him, but what can you do in 2014 with a culture so engrossed in social media?
[Any other moms with ideas on that? PLZ comment.]
It’s a beautiful day for two baseball games and luckily here we are in Starkville, Mississippi home to the Left Field Lounge (NCAA top 25 best places to watch baseball #5- so, where my haters at?) Pad is head over heels to introduce Cola to his college friends. So we’re off to enjoy the sun and America’s favorite sport. Maybe even split some peanuts. I’d ask them if they’re hungry but I don’t know where they went… ugh, Who Let the Dogs Out?
